A child's development is, absolutely crucial; as they grow older they will move through a series of milestones, from the first time they learn to walk and run, through to their transitioning into a different environment such as going to school, college, and church. Throughout these transitions, children have to forge peer groups, make more intrinsic friendships, then eventually emerging into the adult society to work. As children mature the challenges facing them to become more complex, particularly as they approach middle childhood. Family, friends, school and other sources around them will impact on their wellbeing, and will, in some instances place pressure on them as individuals. The period of middle childhood is infamously a very sensitive period, owing to the fact that all of these outside influences and pressures can accumulate to become overwhelming for some children and subsequently can contribute to mental health problems. For example, if a child received a lower grade than anticipated or if a pupil was underachieving it can spark a lack of confidence or cause low self-esteem. Another considerable contributing factor to children’s emotions and instability in today’s society is the influence of social media.
I plan, therefore, to explore further, the most common factors that can influence children's mental health and this is primarily why I am interested in my chosen topic.
